Kickboxing Mouthguard Rules: WAKO Gum Shield Requirements

Clear AlienGuards Origin custom kickboxing mouthguard with the AlienGuards logo

Kickboxing mouthguard rules under the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) are clear: tooth protection is mandatory for all fighting disciplines and all age categories, the mouth-guard must fit the athlete’s mouth, and it may be any colour. This article focuses on the published rules and equipment language from WAKO, ISKA and GLORY. For fit, model picks and how to order, use our kickboxing mouthguards page.

Always confirm with your sanctioning body, athletic commission, promoter fact sheet or gym rules. Amateur, pro and local shows can add their own sheets on top of the federations cited here.

Is a mouthguard required in kickboxing?

Yes, under WAKO. The WAKO Equipment Book (Article 1.3.3, Teeth protection) and matching language in the WAKO Rules (Article 2.3.1.3) state that using tooth protection is mandatory for all fighting disciplines, in all age categories.

ISKA amateur tournament rules (K-1, Unified and Muay Thai amateur sheets) list an individually fitted mouth guard (gum shield) as protective equipment. ISKA Thailand’s published rules page likewise requires every fighter to wear a mouthpiece during any contest, with no round beginning until both mouthpieces are in place. GLORY Kickboxing Rules (as of March 16, 2026) require all athletes to wear a mouthguard during the match, approved by GLORY or the Regulator. The American Dental Association lists martial arts and combat sports among activities where it recommends a properly fitted mouthguard.

WAKO fit, material and colour

WAKO’s teeth-protection article sets specific equipment language — distinct from IFMA Muay Thai’s “not red or pink” colour rule:

  • Material: soft and pliable rubber-plastic or silicone.
  • Coverage: protection on only the upper teeth, or on both upper and lower teeth, is allowed.
  • Fit: must enable free breathing, be adapted to the competitor’s mouth configuration, and must not protrude outside the mouth in any way.
  • Colour: mouth-guards can be of any colour.

A custom guard made from your impression matches the “adapted to the competitor’s mouth” expectation better than a loose tray that can slip when you check a kick or take a punch. If you fight under a different promotion, check that body’s equipment sheet — fit and colour rules are not identical everywhere.

Voluntary spit-out, warnings and points

WAKO treats voluntarily spitting out or dropping the mouth-guard as a foul across its fighting chapters. Under the published full-contact foul language, if a kickboxer spits out the mouth guard voluntarily, the central referee must stop the fight and give an official warning the first time and a minus point the second time. GLORY lists spitting out the mouthguard among match fouls, and deliberately spitting out the mouth guard under unsportsmanlike conduct. ISKA Thailand’s rules page says the referee shall call time to rinse and replace a dislodged mouthpiece, and may deduct points if the mouthpiece is being intentionally dislodged.

A guard that pops out in sparring is usually a fit problem — see why does my mouthguard fall out? before fight night.

Pro, gym and commission notes

WAKO covers international amateur kickboxing across its fighting disciplines (including full contact, low kick, K-1 style and related formats in the same equipment/rules books). ISKA amateur sheets call for an individually fitted gum shield; pro and regional ISKA events publish their own mouthpiece language. GLORY covers its professional matches under the March 16, 2026 rules PDF. U.S. athletic commissions, local shows and gym sparring sheets can differ. We do not invent a blanket “every U.S. gym requires X brand / X colour” claim — check your sanctioning body, promoter fact sheet or coach’s gear list before weigh-ins.

Kickboxing is not on the NFHS school mouthguard-mandate list (football, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, and wrestling with braces). Competition kickboxing follows WAKO, ISKA, GLORY, commission or local rules, not high-school sports codes.

Kickboxing with braces

Athletes with braces can get AlienGuards. Do not use our at-home impression kit over braces; that can damage the appliances. Have your dentist take an impression or 3D scan, then ship it to us or email it to impressions@alienguards.com. More detail in mouthguards for orthodontic patients.

Under WAKO competition rules, a mouth-guard over braces or retainers is not allowed unless a dentist’s certificate allows it, and any kickboxer with a dental brace must provide a WAKO Dental Brace Certificate from their orthodontic surgeon. WAKO also states that if the kickboxer has braces on the lower teeth or on both upper and lower teeth, they must have a mouth-guard on both upper and lower teeth. Bring the certificate paperwork your federation requires — our lab work does not replace WAKO’s medical/equipment forms.

Which AlienGuard for kickboxing?

Our picks for kickboxing are Origin and Origin Pro — 5 mm combat guards for boxing, MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, karate and taekwondo.

  • Origin — reinforced impact zones at 5 mm, lower starting price, and the only model with Trim for Gag Reflex.
  • Origin Pro — same 5 mm protection with more breathability and comfort, logo and text together, and an optional High Impact 6mm upgrade for super high-impact training and fights.

NanoBite is our 4 mm ultra-slim guard for BJJ, wrestling and team contact sports — not our pick for kickboxing striking. PowerBite is for powerlifting and weightlifting, not kickboxing.

Kickboxing mouthguard rules FAQ

Is a mouthguard required under WAKO kickboxing rules?

Yes. WAKO Article 1.3.3 / 2.3.1.3 makes tooth protection mandatory for all fighting disciplines, in all age categories. The mouth-guard must fit the athlete’s mouth and enable free breathing.

What colour mouthguard does WAKO allow?

WAKO says mouth-guards can be of any colour. That differs from IFMA Muay Thai’s not-red-or-pink language — check your promotion’s sheet if you fight outside WAKO.

What happens if I spit out my mouthguard in kickboxing?

Under WAKO, voluntarily spitting out the mouth-guard draws an official warning the first time and a minus point the second. GLORY lists spit-out as a foul; ISKA Thailand’s rules allow point deductions for intentional dislodging.

Can kickboxers with braces get AlienGuards?

Yes. Have your dentist take the impression or 3D scan instead of using our at-home kit, then ship it to us or email impressions@alienguards.com. For WAKO events you also need the federation’s Dental Brace Certificate and may need upper-and-lower coverage if you have lower braces.

Which AlienGuard is best for kickboxing?

Origin or Origin Pro — both 5 mm combat guards. Choose Origin Pro for more breathability, logo plus text, or High Impact 6mm; choose Origin for a lower starting price or Trim for Gag Reflex. NanoBite is not our pick for kickboxing striking; PowerBite is for lifting only.
