Karate & Taekwondo Mouthguard Rules: WKF and WT Requirements

Karate and taekwondo mouthguard rules sit under two Olympic-path federations: the World Karate Federation (WKF) for kumite, and World Taekwondo (WT) for kyorugi (sparring). Both treat a gum shield / mouthguard as compulsory competition gear — with different colour and thickness language. This article focuses on the published rules and equipment language. For fit, model picks and how to order, use our karate and taekwondo mouthguards page.

Always confirm with your national federation, tournament bulletin, coach or dojo rules.

Is a mouthguard required in karate?

Yes, under WKF kumite. The WKF 2026 Kumite Competition Rules (valid from 1 January 2026, Article 2.2.7) list a gum shield among compulsory protective equipment, alongside WKF-approved mitts, body protector, shin pads, foot protection and (for males) groin guards.

WKF’s December 2025 kumite referee exam materials state the same baseline: gum-shields are obligatory for all kumite athletes, and if after the bout has started an athlete is found not to be wearing a gum-shield, the athlete will be disqualified. The PDF is published on wkf.net.

USA Karate tracks WKF for international and elite categories. USA Karate’s 2026 kumite referee materials list a mouth guard as compulsory for both USA Karate and WKF/PKF equipment tracks. The American Dental Association lists martial arts and combat sports among activities where it recommends a properly fitted mouthguard.

Is a mouthguard required in taekwondo?

Yes, under World Taekwondo. WT competition rules require a mouthguard before entering the Field of Play / Contest Area, with the rest of the approved protective set (trunk and head protectors, groin guard, gloves, forearm and shin guards, and sensing socks when PSS is used).

WT’s dedicated Mouthguard, Taping, Bracing and Piercing rules (reviewed with FDI Sports Dentistry Experts, 10 February 2020) state it is mandatory to always wear a mouthguard, with no exception, and that no athlete will be allowed to compete if they do not follow those regulations. USA Taekwondo’s 2026 kyorugi rules likewise require a mouthguard before entering the Contest Area.

WKF vs WT: colour, thickness and fit

Karate and taekwondo do not share one colour sheet — check which federation runs your event:

  • WKF kumite: Article 2.2.7 names a gum shield as compulsory. The published kumite rules text does not add a colour or millimetre line for the gum shield beyond that listing (plus the exam-sheet DQ language above). Bring what your national federation and bulletin accept.
  • WT / USA Taekwondo colour: limited to white or transparent only (WT mouthguard rules and WT competition-rules interpretation; USA Taekwondo: clear or white only).
  • WT dedicated mouthguard rules: at least 4 mm anterior and 2 mm on the occlusal (biting) surface; cover the upper teeth through at least the first molar (half of the first molar allowed for severe gag reflex); flexible EVA; custom sports mouthguard preferred; nightguards are not sports mouthguards.
  • WT competition interpretation / USA Taekwondo: also publish a 3 mm minimum with full upper coverage. Confirm which sheet your inspection desk uses — we are not inventing one global millimetre number beyond those PDFs.

A custom clear guard made from your impression matches WT’s white-or-transparent limit and holds better than a loose tray when you check a kick or take a punch.

Missing guard, inspection and disqualification

The sheets we cite do not use the same spit-out point language found in some kickboxing or Muay Thai rulebooks. What they do publish:

  • WKF: an athlete found without a gum-shield after the bout has started will be disqualified.
  • WT: an athlete without a proper mouthguard at inspection, or who fails to wear one during the match despite a warning from an inspection referee, centre referee or WT-commissioned doctor, faces disqualification under the published safety-equipment explanations.

A guard that pops out in sparring is usually a fit problem — see why does my mouthguard fall out? before tournament day.

Dojo, open tournament and school notes

Open tournaments and dojo sparring sheets can differ from WKF/WT — check your bulletin or coach’s gear list. Karate and taekwondo are not on the NFHS school mouthguard-mandate list (football, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, and wrestling with braces). Competition follows WKF, WT, USA Karate, USA Taekwondo or local rules, not high-school sports codes.

Karate and taekwondo with braces

Athletes with braces can get AlienGuards. Do not use our at-home impression kit over braces; that can damage the appliances. Have your dentist take an impression or 3D scan, then ship it to us or email it to impressions@alienguards.com. More detail in mouthguards for orthodontic patients.

Under WKF Article 2.2.6, metallic teeth braces must be approved by the Referee and the Tournament Doctor, and the athlete accepts full responsibility for any injury. WT and USA Taekwondo call for a special braces mouthguard that covers the braces (WT: both upper and lower, dentist-recommended with a letter; USA Taekwondo: cover all braces, double for top and bottom). WT’s dedicated sheet strongly recommends a double mouthguard over braces. Bring federation paperwork — our lab work does not replace medical or inspection forms.

Which AlienGuard for karate and taekwondo?

Our picks for karate and taekwondo are Origin and Origin Pro — 5 mm combat guards built for those striking arts (and boxing, MMA, Muay Thai and kickboxing).

  • Origin — reinforced impact zones at 5 mm, lower starting price, and the only model with Trim for Gag Reflex.
  • Origin Pro — same 5 mm protection with more breathability and comfort, logo and text together, and an optional High Impact 6mm upgrade for super high-impact training and fights.

NanoBite is our 4 mm ultra-slim guard for BJJ, wrestling and team contact sports — not our pick for karate or taekwondo striking. PowerBite is for powerlifting and weightlifting, not karate or taekwondo.

A custom clear build helps under WT’s colour limit, and 5 mm sits above WT’s published minimums. See how thick should a mouthguard be? and the karate and taekwondo mouthguards guide to order.

Ordering and team orders

Every AlienGuard is made from your own impression. We ship an at-home kit; after a good impression arrives, your custom mouthguard is crafted within 10–14 business days and shipped with tracking. Karate and taekwondo mouthguard rules FAQ

Is a gum shield required under WKF karate kumite rules?

Yes. WKF Article 2.2.7 lists a gum shield as compulsory protective equipment. WKF referee exam materials also state gum-shields are obligatory for all kumite athletes, and that an athlete found without one after the bout has started will be disqualified.

What colour mouthguard does World Taekwondo allow?

White or transparent only under WT mouthguard rules and WT competition-rules interpretation. USA Taekwondo requires clear or white only. WKF’s published kumite equipment article does not add a parallel colour ban — check your karate tournament bulletin.

What thickness does WT require?

WT’s dedicated mouthguard rules require at least 4 mm anterior and 2 mm on the biting surface, with upper coverage through at least the first molar. WT competition-rules interpretation and USA Taekwondo also publish a 3 mm minimum. Confirm which sheet your event inspects against.

Can karate or taekwondo athletes with braces get AlienGuards?

Yes. Have your dentist take the impression or 3D scan instead of using our at-home kit, then ship it to us or email impressions@alienguards.com. Bring WKF Referee/Doctor approval for metallic braces, and the dentist letter / braces-covering guard your WT or USA Taekwondo event requires.

Which AlienGuard is best for karate and taekwondo?

Origin or Origin Pro — both 5 mm combat guards. Choose Origin Pro for more breathability, logo plus text, or High Impact 6mm; choose Origin for a lower starting price or Trim for Gag Reflex. NanoBite is not our pick for karate or taekwondo striking; PowerBite is for lifting only.
