Jiu-jitsu is mostly grappling, not striking, but elbows, knees and the mat still find your teeth, and you need to breathe hard through long rolls. AlienGuards are custom-fit from an impression of your teeth, so the guard follows your own bite instead of a generic shape.
NanoBite: our slimmest guard
NanoBite ($94.99) is ultra-slim and low profile, made for jiu-jitsu, wrestling and team sports like football and basketball. Of all our models, it's the best for breathing and talking, which matters when you're defending a choke or gassing out in the last minute of a round. NanoBite can be customized with colors and text.
BJJ gets NanoBite
For jiu-jitsu, gi or no-gi, our pick is NanoBite: at 4 mm it is our thinnest guard, so it stays comfortable through long rolls. Origin and Origin Pro are our 5 mm combat guards for striking sports where you get hit: boxing, MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, karate and taekwondo. If you also fight MMA, use one of those for striking days and NanoBite on the mat.
4 mm for grappling
Non-combat guards are 4 mm thick. Jiu-jitsu, wrestling and grappling fall in the 4 mm group because hits are less direct than in boxing or MMA, where we use 5 mm. You choose thickness by how hard you get hit, not by the size of your mouth. See the sizing and fit guide. If you also train MMA, our striking vs. grappling mouthguard guide compares the options. Wrestlers can start with our wrestling mouthguard guide.
Why custom on the mat
A custom guard is made from your impression, so it doesn't slip or fall out when you're clenching through a pass or a scramble. It's also easier to wear for long sessions than a stock or boil-and-bite guard. Your guard is formed on a plaster model of your bite, pressure-formed from dental-grade material and finished by hand in the USA.
How ordering works
Build your guard online and we ship you an at-home impression kit. Taking the impression takes about 10 minutes, and the putty sets in 2 minutes 30 seconds; the impression guide walks you through it. Mail the impression back to our lab, and your guard is crafted within 10–14 business days after we receive a good impression, then shipped with tracking. Not sure your impression worked? Email a photo to support@alienguards.com and we will tell you if it can be used.
Care
Rinse before and after training, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, store it in a ventilated case and keep it away from heat. Replace it every year, or sooner if it's worn. Wear braces? You can still get an AlienGuard, but your dentist needs to take your impression instead of using our at-home kit, so your braces don't get damaged. Your dentist can take an impression or 3D scan, then ship it to us or email it to impressions@alienguards.com. Loose teeth? Talk to your dentist first.
Academy orders
Gyms and academies get 20% off all mouthguards (minimum 5), with your logo and athlete names, through team orders. More for grapplers: how thick a mouthguard should be and breathing and talking with a mouthguard.
