Impression guide

How to take your impression

A perfect impression makes a perfect mouthguard. A good impression gives you a snug fit that protects teeth and gums. Read every step before you start.

Read before you start. If you wear braces, don't use this kit: your dentist needs to take your impression so your braces don't get damaged. Your dentist can take an impression or 3D scan, then ship it to us or email it to impressions@alienguards.com. If you have a retainer, another dental appliance or loose teeth, talk to your dentist before using this kit. AlienGuards, LLC is not responsible for any damage while taking an impression. Additional kits are $25.

Get ready

  • Set a timer for 2 minutes 30 seconds and find a clean, flat surface to work on.
  • Double-check that all the information on the bag label matches what you expect.
1

Test the fit

  • Gently put each tray in your mouth. The right tray fits comfortably over all your teeth with a little wiggle room on the sides.
  • Full coverage, comfortable fit: it may feel big, but your lips should still close comfortably over the front of the tray (picture 1).
2

Mix the putty. Work quickly!

Putty hardens fast. S and M trays use one set of putty; L trays use both sets.

  1. Combine: mix the blue and white putty together (pictures 2 and 3) until the color is even with no streaks. Finish mixing within 15 seconds.
  2. Shape and place: roll the putty into a tube, slightly thicker in the middle, and press it evenly into the tray (pictures 4 and 5).
3

Take the impression

  1. Position yourself: stand in front of a mirror.
  2. Insert and bite: place the tray in your mouth with your lips over the front of the tray. Center your teeth on the tray and putty, then bite down fully until you reach a natural stop (pictures 6 and 7). A deep bite is essential.
  3. Hold still: keep the tray completely still until the timer ends. Don't move your jaw or the tray.
4

Remove and rinse

  1. Gently remove: when time is up, loosen the tray by rocking it up and down, then slowly take it out.
  2. Rinse and keep together: rinse with cool water and check that the impression looks like a full mold of your teeth. Leave the impression inside the tray.
5

Send us a photo

  1. Take a clear photo of your impression (picture 8).
  2. Email it to support@alienguards.com with your name and order number in the subject line.
  3. We review it quickly and confirm when it's approved.
6

Mail it back

  1. Pack securely: once approved, put the impression back in the tray with any unused materials and seal everything in the labeled bag.
  2. Box and return: put the bag back in the box it came in. Place the included return label on top of the existing label (picture 9).
  3. We make it: your custom mouthguard is crafted within 10–14 business days after we receive a good impression.
