Muay Thai Mouthguard Rules: IFMA Gum Shield Requirements

Clear AlienGuards Origin custom Muay Thai mouthguard with the AlienGuards logo

Muay Thai mouthguard rules under the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) are clear: every athlete must wear a gum shield before a round starts, it should be form-fitted, and it must not be red or pink. This article focuses on the published rules and equipment language. For fit, model picks and how to order, use our Muay Thai mouthguards page.

Always confirm with your sanctioning body, athletic commission, promoter fact sheet or gym rules. IFMA governs international amateur competition; professional and local shows can add their own sheets on top.

Is a gum shield required in Muay Thai?

Yes, under IFMA. The May 11, 2026 IFMA Rules & Regulations (section 15.5) state that a gum shield shall be worn by all athletes before the commencement of a round. The same document lists intentionally expelling or removing the gum shield among types of fouls (31.2.6).

WBC Muaythai professional rules likewise require form-fitted gum shields during the contest and treat intentional spit-outs as a warning or disqualification for repeated infractions. The American Dental Association lists martial arts and combat sports among activities where it recommends a properly fitted mouthguard.

Form-fitted, and not red or pink

IFMA section 15.5 says the gum shield should be form-fitted and not of the colour red or pink. That is the color language we cite from the primary PDF — we are not inventing other banned colors beyond what IFMA publishes. A custom guard made from your impression matches the form-fitted expectation better than a loose tray that can slip when you clinch or take a kick.

WBC Muaythai also calls for form-fitted gum shields. If you fight under a different promotion or commission, check that body’s equipment sheet; color and fit rules are not identical everywhere.

Intentional removal, spit-out and the Second’s rinse

IFMA treats the gum shield as required gear for the start of every round, with clear foul language if you take it out on purpose:

  • Intentional removal: it is forbidden to intentionally remove the gum shield during the contest; the athlete shall be cautioned, warned or disqualified.
  • Foul list: intentionally expelling or removing the gum shield is listed among types of fouls (31.2.6).
  • If it comes out: should an athlete’s gum shield be removed from their mouth, it should be rinsed by the athlete’s Second before being returned to the athlete’s mouth.

WBC Muaythai similarly forbids intentionally spitting out the gum shield, with a warning or disqualification for repeated infractions. A guard that pops out in sparring is usually a fit problem — see why does my mouthguard fall out? before fight night.

Pro, gym and commission notes

IFMA covers international amateur Muay Thai (including Full Contact and related formats in the same rulebook). WBC Muaythai covers professional title contests under its published rules. U.S. athletic commissions, local shows and gym sparring sheets can differ. We do not invent a blanket “every U.S. gym requires X brand / X color” claim — check your sanctioning body, promoter fact sheet or coach’s gear list before weigh-ins.

Muay Thai is not on the NFHS school mouthguard-mandate list (football, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, and wrestling with braces). Competition Muay Thai follows IFMA, WBC Muaythai, commission or local rules, not high-school sports codes.

Muay Thai with braces

Athletes with braces can get AlienGuards. Do not use our at-home impression kit over braces; that can damage the appliances. Have your dentist take an impression or 3D scan, then ship it to us or email it to impressions@alienguards.com. More detail in mouthguards for orthodontic patients.

Which AlienGuard for Muay Thai?

Our picks for Muay Thai are Origin and Origin Pro — 5 mm combat guards for boxing, MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, karate and taekwondo.

  • Origin — reinforced impact zones at 5 mm, lower starting price, and the only model with Trim for Gag Reflex.
  • Origin Pro — same 5 mm protection with more breathability and comfort, logo and text together, and an optional High Impact 6mm upgrade for super high-impact training and fights.

NanoBite is our 4 mm ultra-slim guard for BJJ, wrestling and team contact sports — not our pick for Muay Thai striking. PowerBite is for powerlifting and weightlifting, not Muay Thai.

A custom guard made from your impression stays put better than a loose tray — useful when IFMA expects the gum shield in before every round. Thickness context: how thick should a mouthguard be? Start from the Muay Thai mouthguards guide when you are ready to order.

Muay Thai mouthguard rules FAQ

Is a gum shield required under IFMA Muay Thai rules?

Yes. IFMA section 15.5 requires a gum shield worn by all athletes before the commencement of a round. Intentionally expelling or removing it is listed as a foul.

What color gum shield does IFMA allow?

IFMA says the gum shield should be form-fitted and not of the colour red or pink. Check your promotion if you fight outside IFMA — other bodies may use different color language.

What happens if I spit out or remove my gum shield?

Under IFMA, intentional removal can bring a caution, warning or disqualification, and it is listed as a foul. If the gum shield comes out of the mouth, the athlete’s Second should rinse it before returning it. WBC Muaythai similarly warns or DQs for repeated intentional spit-outs.

Can Muay Thai athletes with braces get AlienGuards?

Yes. Have your dentist take the impression or 3D scan instead of using our at-home kit, then ship it to us or email impressions@alienguards.com.

Which AlienGuard is best for Muay Thai?

Origin or Origin Pro — both 5 mm combat guards. Choose Origin Pro for more breathability, logo plus text, or High Impact 6mm; choose Origin for a lower starting price or Trim for Gag Reflex. NanoBite is not our pick for Muay Thai striking; PowerBite is for lifting only.
